Volcanic Hills is a new Okanagan winery that opened last summer in West Kelowna, not far from Quails’ Gate and Mt. Boucherie. The winery recently showed up off its modest (so far) portfolio at a Vancouver tastings. The wines include a Gewürztraminer, a Gamay Noir, a Chardonnay Icewine (that won a silver medal at the recent Chardonnay du Monde competition) and this wine.
Magma’s appeal, aside from the price, is that it is just the rustic red to wash down burgers all summer long. The blend includes Foch and a black-hued Russian red called Michurinetz, fleshed out with press wines from the other reds in the cellar. With hints of cranberry and cherry on the nose, the wine has gobs of sweet fruit and a spicy finish.
