Stoneboat Vineyards of Oliver made its first Icewine in 2007. The winery had not actually planned to do so; as a result, it had not registered the Icewine grapes and the intention with the regulators in advance. That disqualified them from calling it Icewine, so they came up with Verglas, a proprietary name. That wine was a great success, no doubt helped by a name that sets it apart. Now, they don’t bother to call it Icewine even though it is made to Icewine protocols.

The 2009 Verglas is charming and seductive. It has a fabulous aroma of peaches and ripe pineapples and it tastes like a bowl of tropical fruits. The bright acidity gives the wine perfect balance, giving it a clean and focussed finish without any cloying sweetness. You need to visit the winery to get this wine but it will be worth the trip.
