Michael Bartier, the winemaker at Road 13, has made a particular reputation for creating complex blends, so much so that Road 13’s signature wines are Rockpile (a red) and Stemwinder (a white). These blends have replaced a number of single varietals in the winery’s line. The winery reports that consumers are on board, with rising sales each month since the blends were released this spring.
Here comes another blend! The knock against Viognier on its own is that the wine can be too full, too intense and perhaps too alcoholic. Michael Bartier’s blend turns this Viognier-based wine into a crisp and refreshing white. It has the grip that comes from the tannin in the Viognier. It has an attractive herbal aroma and flavours of citrus and melons. Try it with seafood.
