Here is good value at entry-level pricing from a solid South African winery. Graham Beck established the winery in 1983, having already succeeded in the home renovation business and then in coal mining and transportation. By now, there are three generations of the Beck family, running a business with two substantial properties and 200 employees.
The grapes for this wine were fermented together in stainless steel and then spent about 12 months on French and American oak barrels (30% of which are new). The result is a wine with soft, ripe tannins and satisfying weight that begins with classic aromas of plum and leather. On the palate, there are flavours of plum, mocha, vanilla, liquorice and spice. This is an eminently quaffable red.
