In a blind tasting, you could have told me this was a Torrontes from Argentina. That is a white variety that usually has a core of fruity flavours and an exotic, spicy personality. Just like this wine. I am totally astounded at this minor dollop of Schönburger has given both the nose and the finish the spicy elements of a Muscat variety. It seems to lift the spice notes inherent in all the other varieties in this blend except for Müller-Thurgau, a bland white that is useful as a filler. The winery notes reveal that the Riesling included some botrytis-affected grapes, which accounts for the honeyed notes of the mid-palate fruit.
The bottom line is that winemaker Michael Bartier has come up with a zesty, refreshing white blend that is just ideal for summer evenings in the back deck. The wine is fruity enough to be enjoyed as on its own and dry enough to pair with seafoods and salads.
