At CedarCreek, this wine is called fruit salad in a glass. Arguably, it is one of the world’s best Ehrenfelsers – not that there are many, which is strange since the wine can be so delicious. The grape was developed at Geisenheim in Germany in 1929 by crossing Riesling and Silvaner. It is named for a dramatic castle ruin on the Rhine, close to the picturesque city of Rüdesheim.
CedarCreek has been buying Ehrenfelser for a number of years from a 35-year-old planting at Westbank. Several years ago, changes on how the grapes were grown yielded dramatic tropical aromas and flavours in the wines. This has now become an early sought cult wine. It begins with glorious aromas of nectarines, apricots and peaches and delivers mouth-filling flavours of passion fruit and mango. The finish is slightly off-dry but the balance is so perfect that the wine can be enjoyed on its own or with food. It will be sold out by mid-summer, easily.
