In his notes, winemaker Howard Soon suggests that this wine is “what a good, honest Pinot Gris should taste like.” That caused me a chuckle because, in my notes, I speculated that the wine has a lot in common with a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. That’s not a criticism – I happen to think New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is as close to bliss as it gets. I like Howard’s wine.
What reminds me of New Zealand is the aroma and flavour of grapefruit and the crisp, vibrant and refreshing acidity. This is a bone dry white wine with 8.7 grams of acidity. The acidity lifts the fruit flavours and adds backbone and structure to this wine. The tangy finish lingers.
This is definitely a wine that complements food. Howard’s notes recommend an onion and bacon quiche or smoked salmon dishes or scallops in butter sauce. I would add grilled white fish filets or linguine with a cream sauce.
