The 2001 Bordeaux wines are being
released
By John Schreiner
For many wine lovers, Bordeaux remains a gold standard
of quality and, thus, no wine cellar is complete without
a selection of good château-bottled wines.
Quality is never cheap but there is a way to save a few
bucks: by buying what the wine trade calls futures. Quite
simply, this involves paying for wines now and taking
delivery in a year or two.
In the Vancouver market, wine merchant John Clerides,
the owner of Marquis Wine Cellars, has developed a particular
niche for offering futures. Currently, Marquis has an
offer open for wines from the terrific 2003 vintage (so
good that some châteaux are sold out already). The
wines are summed up in a fat booklet, packed with information.
The offer closes October 31 and the wines will be arriving
in two years.
The 2001 wines are just arriving, to be released October
1. Those who put their money down two years ago will simply
pick up the wines and those who did not can buy selected
examples at the store. There is a release tasting on the
evening of October 1 in the store, with tickets at $30.
Considering the price of these wines, it is well worth
investing a little in research before buying. The store’s
telephone: 604-684-0445. |
